Another Week-Long Heat Wave To Hit The Southland
LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―
Another heat wave will start rolling over the Southland Tuesday and last a week, forecasters said.
The National Weather Service said in an advisory issued early Tuesday morning that the heat wave will result from an upper-level high pressure system that's now centered over Arizona and building westward, combined with weak offshore flow.
The peak of the heat wave will come Wednesday and Thursday, when highs in the Santa Clarita Valley and western San Fernando Valley reach 108, the advisory said.
Temperatures will drop several degrees Saturday, but highs will still be "well above normal," it said, adding the heat wave in Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties would break next Tuesday.
"If you plan to enjoy outdoor activities early this week, be prepared for very hot weather, even in the mountains," the advisory said.
"Take precautions to protect yourself from the heat. Reduce outdoor activities if possible, at least from late morning through early evening."
The NWS also urged residents to wear loose, lightweight clothing, drink plenty of water, and take advantage of the shade or air condition if possible.
"Never, ever leave children, the elderly or pets in enclosed automobiles, even for the shortest time," the advisory warned. "Temperatures quickly rise to life-threatening levels, even if the windows are partially opened."
