Burglary Suspect Shot, Arrested In Anaheim

ANAHEIM, Calif. A burglary suspect who was shot at by a detective but not hit was arrested Wednesday following a pursuit by Anaheim police, authorities said.

Plain clothes detectives on surveillance spotted a man breaking into the La Costa restaurant at Knott and Orange avenues at 1:30 a.m., Anaheim police Lt. Larry Garrison said.

When detectives moved in to take the man into custody, he jumped into a Ford Explorer and fled, Garrison said.

A detective "fired a number of rounds at the suspect," striking only the vehicle, he said, adding that it was not immediately clear why the detective opened fire.

The bandit drove away in the SUV, triggering a chase, he said.

During the high-speed pursuit, police saw the suspect throwing various items out of the SUV's window, including coins and cash, Garrison said.

About five minutes into the pursuit, the suspect pulled over and surrendered on Magnolia Avenue just south of Ball Road, Garrison said.

Garrison said detectives would look into other burglaries possibly involving the suspect, including more than 60 break-ins that have occurred in Anaheim since June.

"We don't suspect this was his first one," Garrison said.

The man's name was not immediately released.

Officers later recovered a large bag full of money discarded during the chase just west of the intersection at Broadway and Brookhurst Street, according to reporters at the scene.
