Freezing Temperatures Leave Residents Shivering
LOS ANGELES (AP) ―
A cold snap set record-low temperatures across southern California, and more chilly weather was predicted for Sunday night.
The mercury nose-dived in downtown Los Angeles to 36 degrees just after sunrise, breaking the record of 37 degrees set in 1932.
Forecasters announced a freeze watch for the coastal valleys in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, and a high wind watch in the Los Angeles County mountains.
Ice patches were blamed for numerous roadway accidents, and authorities said scores of water pipes burst in homes in the San Fernando Valley.
In Woodland Hills, the low was 20 degrees, tying the old record set in 1963. Long Beach hit 31 degrees, a new low.
It dipped to 3 degrees in Lancaster, eclipsing the record low set in 1963. And the thermometer fell to 27 degrees in Burbank, another record.
