NWS Issues Flash Flood Watch

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― A late season storm is expected to come ashore Sunday evening and bring as much as one inch of rain in the coastal areas and more in the mountains.

A flash flood watch was issued by the National Weather Service for the valleys, high desert and foothills below burn areas through Monday morning.

The mostly cloudy skies Sunday will be accompanied with winds of about 15 mph by the afternoon ahead of the front.

"We're expecting a strong southerly flow that will enhance rainfall totals in the foothills, especially on south-facing slopes," NWS Meteorologist Joe Sirard said. "It'll all be said and done by late Monday afternoon."

Since July, 12.3 inches of rain has fallen in downtown Los Angeles, which is below the seasonal norm of 15 inches.

The record rainfall for the date, set in 1921, is 1.03 inches. The record for Monday the 22nd, is 0.33 inches, set in 1921.

"The record for the 22nd has a good chance of being broken," Sirard said.
