24 Prom Guests Cram Into Elevator, Get Stuck

SACRAMENTO (CBS) ― A prank turned into a nightmare when two dozen teens spent more than an hour stuck in an elevator at their senior prom, CBS station KOVR-TV reported.

Graduating seniors at Mira Loma High were celebrating at The Sacramento Grand Ballroom on Saturday night when students decided to try something a little out of the ordinary.

"I heard some of the kids saying they were going to see how many they could stick in the elevator," said dance chaperone Jill Young. "I said, 'Oh, like we used to do with the VW Bug."

Young says that at least 24 teens squeezed into an elevator in the Ballroom. They decided to ride the elevator to another floor, despite the car being filled far beyond the weight limit.

The real trouble began once the elevator started moving.

"It just kind of stopped, dropped a little bit, and then stopped," said Austin Chamberlain, who was on the elevator. "It sucked."

The elevator lurched to a sudden stop between floors, trapping the students who were crammed inside, unable to move. "It was hot. Hot and kind of hectic, cause we didn't know what was going on," Austin said.

Administrators phoned the students to try to keep them calm while the Fire Department responded to the incident.

"One of the girls had claustrophobia and was getting a little anxious," Young said.

It took the Fire Department two hours to be able to find a way to get the students out. No injuries were reported.
