When Sergio Garcia saw that the requirements at his high school for Senior Prom kind and queen did not require a gender, he decided to run for queen. That's where he said he felt he fit in.
Garcia, 18, is Fairfax High's Schools Prom Queen. He said it did cross his mind to run for king, but he decided against it.
"I'm very flamboyant," Garcia said. "I thought, 'I can relate myself more to a queen, and if I win that title it will be the best thing that's ever happened to me. This for me, was like growing up and taking a step forward."
Garcia said he didn't want to take away from girl's running for the queen, but he did want to embrace who he is.
Fairfax High School is known for its diversity, CBS station KCBS-TV reported.
"It's an example of the culture we're trying to create at this school," said Principal Ed Zubiate. "He ran and he won."
"There were some people who thought he should have run for king because he's a boy," said fellow student Vanessa Lo. But the majority of the people at this school seemed to accept him. He deserves to be queen."
