Eating Contests Test Gobblers Greatness, Gluttony

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ― Lots of Americans plan to gorge themselves on Thanksgiving. But they're mere amateurs compared to folks competing in the Turkey Bowl.

Professional eaters will see who's fastest gobbling a 20-pound bird in an event that will be televised nationally on Spike TV.

Some annual events, like the corn-eating contest in Iowa and the meat-pie championship in England, have been cut back or canceled amid an epidemic of obesity.

But competitive eater Tim Janus shrugs off the critics. He says "doing it once in a while isn't bad for you, when you do it responsibly." Janus says most of the people who wolf down food for money are in "pretty good shape."
