Missing Canine Cop Found Safe In Baltimore
BALTIMORE (CBS) ―
K9 officer "Rolf," who has been missing since the weekend, has been found unharmed.
The dog was found early Monday morning by police at the intersection of Reisterstown Road and Cold Spring Lane, according to CBS affiliate WJZ-TV.
A few months ago, MTA police introduced "Rolf" as one of its first bomb-sniffing dogs. The highly trained German shepherd patrols the MTA system along with his human handler in search of potential explosives.
The 65-pound officer somehow managed to slip away from his handler's home on in north Baltimore Saturday night. Police had been in a frantic search for him since.
"The officer is missing him, the officer would like to find him, his family would like to see him back," Sgt. Louis Jones told WJZ-TV earlier. "The family of the MTA police department and the patrons in our system would like to see him back."
He has a distinct black coat with silver and brown markings. In his right ear is a tattoo that says "J-328."
"They are trained to work in airports, in trains, in subway systems, around a lot of people - so they are somewhat mild mannered," Jones said. "They are not trained to be protection dogs, they are very valuable. It takes a lot of time and effort to get these dogs to where they can find explosives."
"He's much more valuable to us and the transit administration doing his job, what he was trained to do, than he may be for you as a pet," Jones said.
