'Jose Canseco Street' May Be Swept
S. Florida Official Wants The Name Change Due To Canseco's Admitted Steroid Use
MIAMI (CBS) ―
A Miami-Dade County Commissioner thinks it's an embarrassment to have a South Florida street named after retired baseball star Jose Canseco and has plans to do something about it.
Commissioner Joe Martinez, whose district includes Jose Canseco Street, is proposing a resolution to change the name of the street. If the resolution makes it through a committee on Tuesday, it will go to the full Board of County Commissioners for a final vote, reported CBS station WFOR-TV in Miami.
Martinez says the main reason he wants the name change is Canseco's admitted steroid use. He revealed his steroid use, as well as that of other players, in his 2005 book, "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big."
Martinez believes Canseco's self-admitted indiscriminate and illegal use of the performance enhancement drug has marred his name enough to warrant taking down his name from the street.
Canseco graduated from Miami Coral Park Senior High.
