Calif. Restaurants Must Now Provide Nutrition Info

SB 1420 Goes Into Effect Wednesday, July 1

The first phase of a new food labeling system goes into effect on July 1, 2009.

California now requires large restaurant chains to offer customers brochures that show menu items' nutritional information.

The amount of calories, saturated fat, carbohydrates and sodium must now be listed for all standard menu items.

The second phase of the bill will take effect in 2011 when restaurants will be required to print that information directly on table menus, as well as indoor menu boards.

The bill, SB 1420, was introduced by Sens. Padilla and Migden.
