Battle Of Backups? USC & ASU Have QB Issues

The PAC-10's two highest rated qb's Mark Sanchez and ASU's Rudy Carpenter are both dealing with injuries for this Saturday's game at the Coliseum.

Sanchez appears to be OK to play with a hyper-extended knee, but Pete Carroll declined to say if Sanchez will start versus the struggling Sun Devils.

Meanwhile, Carpenter is questionable with a sprained left ankle.

The injury puts Carpenter's streak of 36 consecutive starts in jeopardy.

"First of all, we need to get the OK from the doctor, and then, see how he moves out there," Sun Devils coach Dennis Erickson said. "I'm not going to put him on the field unless he has the mobility to be able to move and throw. He has to be pretty close to 100 percent.

"We won't know anything about that until time goes on, so it's really at the point that it really doesn't need to be discussed until we see how he progresses in the next three days. Knowing Rudy, he's tough, and if he plays, it's because he is tough."

ASU has been the country's biggest dissapointment this season, ranked in the preseason top 15, ASU has dropped three in a row and are 25-point underdogs to the Trojans.
