LOS ANGELES Angelenos may have a difficult time moving around the city Sunday as thousands of runners will compete in the 23rd annual Los Angeles Marathon, which will force the closure of hundreds of intersections and detour Metro buses.

The 26.2-mile race will start at Universal Studios and head south through Hollywood, mid-Wilshire, USC, West Adams and East Los Angeles. Runners will finish at Fifth and Flower streets in downtown Los Angeles.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will add more cars to the Red Line subway, which has stops near the marathon's start and finish lines. Trains will run every six minutes during the early morning hours, then every 10 minutes until about 4 p.m.

The Metro buses that will be rerouted or detoured between 4 a.m. and 6 p.m. are:

2, 4, 10, 14, 16, 18, 20, 21, 26, 28, 30, 31, 33, 35, 37, 38, 40, 42, 45, 48, 51, 52, 53, 55, 60, 62, 66, 68, 70, 71, 76, 78, 79, 81, 83, 90, 91, 92, 94, 96, 102, 105, 150, 155, 156, 163, 180, 181, 200, 201, 204, 206, 207, 210, 212, 217, 224, 240, 333, 439, 444, 445, 446, 447, 460, 484, 485, 487, 490, 550, 603, 704, 720, 745, 750, 754, 757, 760 and 780.

In the downtown area, no through-bus service will be offered between Western Avenue and Soto Street and from Third Street to Vernon Avenue. Metro buses in the area will drop off passengers near Metro Rail stations.

Harbor (110) Freeway:

• Sixth Street offramps will be closed from 3 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
• Martin Luther King Boulevard offramps will be closed from 3:30 to
  10:30 a.m.
• Northbound Adams Boulevard offramp will be closed from midnight to 1:30 p.m.
• The northbound 39th Street HOV offramp will be closed from 5:30 a.m.to 1:30 p.m.

Santa Monica (10) Freeway:

• The westbound Santa Fe Avenue/Mateo Street offramp will be closed from 3 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• The eastbound Santa Fe Avenue offramp will be closed from 3 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• The eastbound Boyle Street offramp will be closed from 3 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• Normandie Avenue offramps will be closed from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hollywood (101) Freeway:

• The southbound Seventh Street offramp left-turn lane will be closed from 3 to 4:30 a.m.
• Lankershim Boulevard offramps will be closed from 3 to 10 a.m.
• The southbound Vine Street offramp right-turn lane will be closed from 3 to 10:30 a.m.
• The northbound Highland Avenue right-turn loop will be closed from 4:30 to 10 a.m.
• The southbound Highland Avenue offramp will be closed from 4:30 to 10:30 a.m.
• The southbound Barham Boulevard offramp will be closed from 6 to 10 a.m.
• The northbound Ventura Boulevard offramp will be closed from 3:30 to 9 a.m.
