As the Los Angeles Dodgers prepare for their National League Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, councilmen from the two cities Monday bet Dodger dogs against Philly cheesesteaks that their team will advance to the World Series.
Los Angeles Councilman Tom LaBonge and Philadelphia Councilman Curtis Jones Jr. agreed to the bet in advance of Thursday's Game 1 of the best-of-seven series.
"I told Councilman Jones that we'd send him a loaf of pumpkin bread, baked by a cloistered order of nuns at the Monastery of the Angels just beneath the historic Hollywood sign, as well as a case of Dodger dogs and nine books on the history of Los Angeles if the Phillies take home the pennant," LaBonge said.
If the Dodgers win the series, Los Angeles will receive a 6-foot-long cheesesteak, a case of Tastykakes and books about Philadelphia.
"Today is Councilman LaBonge's birthday. I am sure his birthday wish is a Dodger pennant but the Phillies are on fire and determined to win the World Series and bring back a championship that the citizens of Philadelphia deserve for being such loyal fans," Jones said.
Both councilmen agreed that the losing councilman will wear the other
team's jersey during a council meeting.
The Phillies will play host to the first two games of the series at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park. Games 3 and 4 will be played Sunday and next Monday at Dodger Stadium. Game 5, if necessary, would be played Oct. 15 at Dodger Stadium. Games 6 and 7 would be played Oct. 17-18 in Philadelphia.
