1906 San Francisco Earthquake & Fire

April 18 marks the 100th anniversary of the 1906 Great Quake and fire in San Francisco. The 7.9 magnitude quake remains the deadliest earthquake in U.S. history, with death toll estimates ranging from 478 to 6,000 dead from both the earthquake and fire.

Destruction in the area of North Beach and Chinatown. The Sentinel Building under construction at Kearny and Columbus at the time of the quake still stands today. View is south along what is now Columbus Avenue toward the current site of the Transamerica Pyramid.
