Applications To Stanford Top Last Year's Record

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) ― Stanford University has received a record number of applications for its fall freshman class.

University officials say more than 30,428 applications have already come in, topping last year's record.

Lisa Lapin, a spokeswoman for the university, says applications have been rising in recent years, making Stanford more selective.

Last year, the school only accepted 7 percent of applicants for the roughly 1,700 positions in its freshman class. That was the lowest rate in its history.

This year's record comes despite the university's decision in February to raise the cost of tuition and room and board to $48,843.

Experts say other universities have also seen applications soar, as more students look to boost their skills in a weak job market.
