Elementary Teacher Charged For Child Molestation

POMONA, Calif. A 65-year-old man was charged with multiple counts of child molestation for allegedly fondling several students while working as a substitute teacher at Powell Elementary School in Azusa.

Virgil Cleon Harper, of Azusa, was charged on Monday with nine counts of lewd act on a child under age 14. Harper's arraignment is scheduled for April 18 in Pomona Superior Court.

He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

According to prosecutors, Harper inappropriately touched a number of students -- male and female -- over a roughly 90-minute span on March 21.

Azusa police Capt. Gene Street said the school's principal contacted police after some students reported the alleged inappropriate contact.
