USC: Auf Wiedershen German Department

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Auf Wiedersehen.

The University of Southern California is eliminating German as a major and minor over the next three years. Some basic German language courses will still be offered.

Department chairman Gerhard Clausing says the USC German department is relatively small, with three full-time professors, three lecturers, 10 undergraduate majors and 10 minors.

Clausing, who has taught at the university for 32 years, says dismantling the German department will likely harm USC's national reputation for scholarship.

USC College of Letters executive vice dean Michael Quick says the German department could no longer function as a separate entity and the decision to disband was mainly administrative.
