L.A. Teachers, Mayor Vie For Control Of 4 Schools

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and teachers' groups have applied to run some Los Angeles schools under a sweeping reform program for the nation's second-largest school district.

Monday was the deadline for private and community groups to file letters of intent for the chance to oversee 30 schools.

Villaraigosa's nonprofit group and others backed by the teachers' union will compete for control of four campuses. School Superintendent Ramon Cortines will decide who gets the nod.

The mayor's group already manages 11 schools.

The reform plan could allow private groups and charter school operators to take control of some 250 new or low-performing schools -- about a third of those in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
