Glitch Cuts Benefits To 1,300 LAUSD Workers

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― A payroll system glitch has cut off health care benefits to more than 1,000 workers at the Los Angeles school district.

The glitch comes one year after the same system was blamed for thousands of teachers having paycheck problems and some not getting paid at all.

The latest problem affected mostly substitute teachers, many of whom haven't been able to fill prescriptions or visit a doctor.

The district sent a letter last month informing some staffers that their health coverage ended July 31. This week the district apologized for the error and pledged to restore the benefits.

District officials say the system was supposed to drop inactive employees and some were correctly dropped. But since work for substitutes slows down in summer, many eligible staffers lost their benefits.
