Herb Alpert, Lani Hall Donate $15M To CalArts
VALENCIA, Calif.
The California Institute of the Arts announced on Wednesday Herb Alpert and his wife, Lani Hall, have donated $15 million to its music school.
CalArts President Steven D. Lavine said the school will be renamed The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts in recognition of the gift and the long-time support provided by the foundation created by Alpert, an eight-time Grammy award winner and co-founder of A&M Records.
Lani Hall is a Grammy-winning vocalist.
"Herb and Lani stand with us in championing the individual artist, one who charts an independent creative course," said Lavine.
"As artists themselves, Herb and Lani exemplify that same spirit of independent experimentation we nurture at CalArts: to cross the boundaries between the arts, to connect tradition with innovation, and to define the future of the arts."
The $15 million endowment brings to nearly $24 million the value of the support that Alpert's foundation has provided CalArts in the past 16 years, according to CalArts.
Alpert pledged $30 million to UCLA in November to establish the cross-disciplinary UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.
Alpert, 73, was first known for playing the trumpet and leading Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass in the 1960s.
