Kaiser Permanente's Response To Mammogram Story

Kaiser Permanente responds to David Goldstein's piece on mammograms:

"We regret a series of regulatory citations for record keeping with some mammography equipment at our Edgemont medical office in Los Angeles. We have improved our record-keeping procedures and oversight to meet regulatory requirements.

We want to reassure the women who had mammograms at the Edgemont medical office that we are confident their films were accurate. After reviewing mammograms from the five days listed in the level-one citation last year, we found no need to re-test any of the women.

Here are some additional safeguards: State-certified mammography technicians examine each image to make certain the image quality is satisfactory. Radiologists then view the image to check for possible tumors or other medical problems. Should there be any problem with the image quality, the radiologists routinely order a re-test. Women who have questions should call their physician for more information.

We have provided additional training to our mammography technicians and have also provided more stringent oversight and double checks to make certain that all procedures are properly documented."
