How To Stay Well-Nourished On A Budget

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― Well, while it's true that fast food is often cheaper than healthy meals, there are things you can do to lower your food bills without sacrificing good nutrition.

Finding foods that help your waistline and your bottom line – it's not as hard as you think.

Self Magazine Director, Tula Karras says, "It's actually a myth that you can't eat healthfully on a budget. And in fact, once you start scrutinizing your grocery list, you're probably going to find areas in which you can eat more healthfully and save money at the same time."

Tula Karros of Self Magazine says, just take a moment, analyze your grocery list, think alternatives to expensive items.

"Canned salmon is definitely very nutritionally close to fresh salmon and its far less expensive. It's a wonderful option – you're getting your omega 3's which are wonderful for heart health, so it's something that people should definitely consider in their budget" Karros said.

If you're a meat lover instead of filet, think ground beef – same nutritional value, but a lot cheaper.

"Soup is wonderful in so many ways. For starters, there's research that actually shows that if you start your meal with a bowl of broth-based soup, chicken broth, you're going to eat 100 calories less at the end of the meal. So it's a filling option, and it's a great way to incorporate a lot of healthy foods in there; vegetables, you know, if you've cooked a whole chicken, and then you have leftovers, throw the leftovers into the soup. And, a little bit of soup does go a long way, as far as filling you up" Karros said.

Soup is always that standard. When you do buy fresh produce, buy in bulk. And consider first what's in season. Eating out-of-season fruit is more expensive.
