A reverse 911 system called Alert LA County can now notify more than 7 million listed and unlisted telephone numbers if there is danger from wildfires, earthquakes or other calamities.
Residents can also go to the county Web site www.lacounty.gov to add cellular telephone numbers and e-mail addresses to the Alert LA County system. Alert LA County will cost nearly $2 million for the next five years.
Radio and television notification is already in place, but the new system is expected to be faster and it will target specific areas.
If the number is busy or does not answer, the system will redial. If it reaches an answering machine, the system leaves a message.
