Lifeguards say they will clear Los Angeles County beaches around 8 p.m. in response to a tsunami advisory for possible dangerous currents following a magnitude-8 earthquake in the Pacific Ocean near Samoa.
Officials say they don't believe coastal regions will suffer much damage, but some beaches could see higher-than-usual tides beginning at about 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Los Angeles County Lifeguard Capt. Terry Harvey says personnel are on standby to move all county beach vehicles to higher ground if needed. He says several bay watch rescue vessels have been deployed and are looking for any changes in conditions at sea.
Curt Kaplan of the National Weather Service in Oxnard says the seismic activity could bring waves a foot higher than normal.
