Campaign Against Gay Marriage Raises $25M

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ― The campaign supporting a November ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in California has raised more than $25 million.

Frank Schubert, co-manager of ProtectMarriage.com, said nearly $23 million of the total has come in since the measure qualified for the Nov. 4 ballot in June.

Groups working for and against initiatives faced a midnight Monday deadline to report their campaign finance activity through the end of September.

As of Sept. 30, ProtectMarriage had $12.8 million cash on hand, despite having spent more than $10 million on securing air time for its television ads.

Proposition 8 would amend the state Constitution to limit marriage to between a man and a woman.
