Controversy Brews Over Flags Used At The DNC
DENVER, Colo. (CBS) ―
Many of the flags waving in the audience during John McCain's speech in Colorado Springs Saturday came from the final night of the Democratic National Convention, according to the Republican Party. The Democrats say that is not the case.
"I have something you should be aware of. Apparently, last week when the DNC left town, they left behind about 12,000 American flags," a speaker told the audience before McCain appeared.
A worker at Invesco Field at Mile High claims he found bags of flags the day after Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's acceptance speech. He called the Republican Party to pick up the flags. The GOP said the flags were distributed to the crowd for McCain's rally Saturday.
The Democrats say extra flags were not thrown away, but placed in plastic bags to be used for a future event.
"Not only did we not throw away flags, but all those signs you saw on the convention floor, they are all picked up, they are in bags, they are at our headquarters," said Pat Waak, Colorado Democratic Party Chair.
"It seems to me that if they are going to do a convention, they should have enough money to buy their own flags," said Obama supporter James McMearn.
Some 85,000 people packed Invesco Field at Mile High for Obama's speech the final night of the convention.
