SoCal Mayor Sorry For 'Christian Community' Remark

LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) ― The mayor of the Antelope Valley city of Lancaster has apologized for saying he was "growing a Christian community" when he gave his State of the City speech recently.

Mayor R. Rex Parris met Monday with local religious leaders, including representatives from the Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Jewish communities.

Parris acknowledges that his Jan. 27 remarks might have caused some to feel left out.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations filed a federal civil rights complaint Friday claiming Parris violated the civil rights of non-Christians and shouldn't have used his official capacity at a city event to advance a particular religion.

CAIR's executive director for Los Angeles, Hussam Ayloush, says he welcomes the mayor's apology.
