Hispanics Boost Clinton, McCain Gains On Economy

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― California Hispanics helped carry Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain to primary victories in California, potentially previewing a war for the Hispanic vote in November.

Exit polls for The Associated Press and television networks reveal Hispanics preferred Clinton by a more than 2-1 margin in the Democratic race.

In the Republican contest, Hispanics also turned out in large numbers, and they preferred McCain by a wide margin.

The exit surveys showed Californians in both major parties shaken by the state of the nation's economy.

Nine in ten Democratic voters and two-thirds of Republicans said the health of the economy is not so good or poor. The Democrats who felt that way preferred Clinton; the Republicans, McCain.
