'Ziggy' The NoHo Gator Is On The Move!

SLIDESHOW: Animals Wild And On The Loose

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. A call to the Department of Animal Services about an exotic animal being raised illegally in a North Hollywood home proved to be no "croc"! Animal Control Officers arrived at the residence to find "Ziggy", a 5-6 foot long alligator.

Ziggy was headed Monday to a facility where she'll be properly cared for by a licensed herpetology society member.

The owner, who has raised the 5-year-old female gator since she was small, surrendered his pet to the Officers without incident.

Alligators are a restricted species in California and require a State Permit for possession. An average male alligator can grow to 13 feet long. They are generally found in the Southeastern United States, primarily in Florida, where alligators thrive in the state's wetlands.

Animal Services asks the public to notify them of any wild animals that are illegally kept in their neighborhoods in order to protect both neighbors and the animals involved.

For more information or assistance call LA Animal Services at (888) 452-7381.
