A four-year-old suffered bite injuries to his face while playing at a friend's house in Riverside Friday night. The dog, a retriever-collie mix, was placed in quarantine, according to a county Animal Services spokesman.
The boy may have accidentally stepped on the dog's tail, said Animal Services spokesman John Welsh. The child, who was not identified, sustained multiple puncture wounds to his face, Welsh said.
The dog is a two-year-old female golden retriever-collie mix, and she will be held in a quarantine area for a total of 10 days, as is routine in dog-bite cases, according to Welsh. The dog could be determined aggressive or vicious, but the owner of the dog would be allowed to appeal.
The boy and other children may have been playing with the dog without adult supervision, Welsh said.
Any dog's behavior can be unpredictable, even in the dog's own yard, according to Animal Services.
