Cougar Dies After Being Tranquilized In La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. A mountain lion found in a San Gabriel Valley neighborhood has died after it was tranquilized by wildlife authorities.

Harry Morse of the state Department of Fish and Game says the big cat was spotted on a freeway soundwall in La Verne on Tuesday.

Game wardens shot the animal with a tranquilizer dart and were going to transport him to a less-populated area.

But Morse says the dart hit the animal in the face and injured it so badly that it had to be euthanized.

Morse says the mountain lion was only about a year old -- an age when young males leave their mothers. He says it's not uncommon for the males to wander and this one may have gotten lost and wound up near the interstate.
