Animals Killed, Injured In Sesnon, Marek Fires

LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services assisted with the evacuation of 276 horses and 132 small animals from the Sesnon and Marek fires in the San Fernando Valley, the department reported Tuesday.

A homeless man and a dog were killed under a freeway overpass and two ranch horses were killed in the Browns Canyon area, officials said.

One cat reportedly was singed by the fire and a poodle suffered seizures. Two horses were hurt, one with a gash believed to be a fence injury and the other with a leg injury.

Of the rescued horses, 159 were taken to Pierce College, 62 to the L.A. Equestrian Center, 46 to Hansen Dam and nine to Peter Pitchess Honor Farm.

Most of the small animals rescued -- 108 -- were taken to the city's Mission Animal Care Center. Another 24 were taken to the West Valley Animal Care Center.

Large animals and horses may be taken to the Ventura County Fairgrounds or Peter Pitchess Honor Farm. The Hansen Dam Equestrian Center and Pierce College both have limited capacity, according to the department.

Small animals can be evacuated to Shepherd of the Hills Church, West Valley Animal Care Center or the Mission Animal Care Center.

Southland residents were also reminded to keep their pets inside during the fires. Wild animals displaced by the fires may be more noticeable, animal experts said.

People should avoid contact with displaced animals and be aware that some wildlife may have mange, which resembles burns, according to the Department of Animal Services.

Anyone who sees a sick or injured animal should stay away from it and call (888) 452-7381 for help.
