Steer Clear of Soda
(CBS)
For many years now we've written about the reasons to avoid soda -- obesity, tooth decay, osteoporosis and diabetes, to name a few. Now add kidney disease to the list of reasons to avoid drinking soda pop.
In a recent study from Loyola University in Chicago, researchers found that women who consumed two or more casns of soda daily nearly double their likelihood for developing kidney disease. In this study, over 9000 adults were questioned about their dietary habits. Urine samples from the participants showed that women who had consumed two or more sodas within 24-hours of the urine test had an excess of protein (albumin) in their urine. This is a marker for kidney damage. The same results did not hold true for men in this study.
Most of the problem with soda has been linked to high fructose corn syrup. As reported in previous articles, approximately 9 out of 20 commercial samples of high fructose corn syrup randomly tested contained mercury, known to be harmful to kidneys. This study did not determine the precise cause of the increased risk.
There are many alternatives available none of us will perish from a soda deficiency. Consider plain sparkling water with a splash of fruit juice for flavor. Drink regular plain water add a few slices of lemon, a few sprigs of mint or a few thin slices of cucumber for a hint of freshness..
