Congress is working on a deal to pass rail safety legislation that would enact the first major reforms in the industry in 14 years, including limiting the hours engineers work and mandating technology that would stop trains on a collision course.
Before 25 people died in the Metrolink commuter train disaster in Los Angeles this month, it looked like Congress was prepared to end another legislative session without passing needed reforms.
Now lawmakers are scrambling to come up with a final deal on sweeping rail safety legislation that has already passed the House and Senate. They hope to pass it before leaving for the election recess at the end of this week.
