Official: Obama To Pick Sen. Salazar For Interior

 Transition To A New Government

DENVER (CBS) ― Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar has accepted an offer to become Barack Obama's Interior Secretary, CBS station KCNC-TV in Denver's Raj Chohan confirmed on Monday.

The Rocky Mountain News also reported a source within President-elect Obama's transition team says Salazar was offered the Interior Secretary job and that he had accepted.

Salazar has cleared his schedule for the next three days, which could indicate he wants to be ready if and when Obama makes an announcement.

Gov. Bill Ritter would pick a replacement to finish out the senator's term if he accepts.

There has been some speculation about who would fill his seat in the Senate if Salazar does join the Obama Administration. Several names have been mentioned, including Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, outgoing Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, and the senator's brother, Rep. John Salazar.

Ritter wouldn't speculate on who he might pick if the seat opens up, but he did comment on Salazar's qualifications for the post.

"Senator Salazar understands water issues, public land issues, access issues, energy issues, and so it would be a great help to the people of Colorado, we would just lose a very, very effective United States Senator, Ritter said.
