California Lawmakers Honor 'King Of Pop'

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― California lawmakers on Friday took time out of their debate over the state's budget deficit to honor the "King of Pop" for his contributions to music.

Assemblymen Sandre Swanson, D-Alameda, and Mike Davis, D-Los Angeles, said Michael Jackson transcended cultures to become a globally recognized musical icon. Jackson died Thursday after collapsing at his home in Los Angeles.

On the Assembly floor Friday, Swanson asked his colleagues to send condolences to "all those fans who are mourning his loss."

Davis, who chairs the Assembly's committee on arts and entertainment, recalled crossing paths with Jackson while working as an aide to Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., then in the state Assembly.

Lawmakers also honored two other California entertainers who died this week, actress Farrah Fawcett and Johnny Carson sidekick Ed McMahon.
