Witnesses reportedly said the woman and the driver of the truck were fighting before the incident, but police would not confirm the information.
A woman police believe was either pushed or fell out of a pickup truck and run over Thursday in Indio was pronounced dead at a hospital, and the driver of the pickup was questioned but not immediately arrested.
Joy Susan Miller, 46, of Yucca Valley, was run over about 1:30 p.m. on Sundance Street near Sundance Gate, said Indio police spokesman Ben Guitron.
"When police arrived they found a woman lying in the street," Guitron said. "She was taken to JFK Hospital, where she was pronounced dead."
The driver of the Nissan pickup truck initially left the scene, but later returned, Guitron said. He was questioned but not arrested.
Police believe the woman was either pushed or fell out of the truck and that she was acquainted with the driver, Guitron said.
"The driver of the vehicle has been cooperative," Guitron said. "We hope to have more answers once we get the results of a toxicology report and autopsy sometime next week."
