Community Journalist Terms of Use

Sign Up To Be A NewsCentral Community Journalist

By registering you're agreeing to some terms and rules.

The main term, of course, is that you're giving NewsCentral (KCBS-TV/KCAL9TV) a license to use the material you send us. The license is perpetual and worldwide, so that we'll always be able to give the material all the exposure we think it deserves, including possibly giving the material to our sister stations, CBS News, CBS Interactive, or a related company. But the license you give us is also non-exclusive, meaning that you can also do whatever else you want to with it, like post it on your own website. We do not have an obligation to use the material and we will pay you a one time fee of $50 only if we do use the material in a news story.

There are also eight rules of engagement. This is how it will work:

  1. Don't send us any unlawful, threatening, abusive, libelous, defamatory, obscene, vulgar, pornographic, profane or indecent material of any kind, including images and language. In other words, don't send us something you don't want your mother to see.
  2. Don't send any material that solicits gambling or engages in any gambling activity. In other words, no gambling please.
  3. Don't send any material which violates or infringes upon the rights of others, including material which is an invasion of privacy or publicity rights or which is protected by someone else's copyright, trademark or other proprietary right unless you first get permission from the owner or right holder. In other words, if it's not yours, don't send it.
  4. Don't send any material for any illegal purposes (or to solicit any illegal act. In other words, we don't want you to become a "person of interest" for the police.
  5. Don't send us any defamatory, libelous, hateful, or harassing material In other words, we're rubber and your glue. It bounces off us and sticks to you.
  6. Don't send any material for commercial purposes or which contains advertising, promotion or marketing. We're a news organization. Our sales department can sell you advertising space.
  7. Don't send us any political material. We don't take sides in elections, and we don't support any political point of view.
  8. Don't post any material for the purposes of sending junk email, chain letters, duplicative or unsolicited messages or "spamming" or in connection with contests, surveys or pyramid schemes. We promise not to send you email or text messages without your permission-can you make the same promise?

So, to summarize the details, if you send us material and we pay you for it, you're granting CBS a perpetual, non-exclusive, unrestricted, worldwide license to use, copy, sublicense, adapt, transmit, publicly perform or display any such material, and to sublicense to third parties the unrestricted right to do the same. This includes the right to exploit any proprietary rights in the material, including but not limited to rights under copyright, trademark, servicemark or patent laws under any relevant jurisdiction. You understand that CBS does not control the material delivered to us, that CBS has no obligation to monitor such material, and that the material posted does not necessarily reflect the views of CBS. CBS assumes no responsibility or liability for any materials or for any claims, damages or losses resulting from their use. CBS reserves the right at all times to disclose any information (including the identity of the persons providing materials) as necessary to satisfy any law, regulation or governmental request. In addition, CBS reserves the right to edit, and to refuse to use any information or materials, in whole or in part, that in CBS's sole discretion are objectionable or in violation of these Terms of Service.
