Local Soldier Responds To Our Online Interview
CBS2/KCAL 9 News was honored several weeks ago when Guillermo Valasco, a soldier in the Army serving in Iraq, sent us a great picture of himself Specialist Carlos A. Moreno showing some Dodger pride in the Middle East.
Josh Rubenstein featured the photo during his "Photo Of The Day" segment and we were surprised and pleased to find out that Guillermo and Carlos were able to see it during our live broadcast streaming on the Web.
The two are set to come home to Los Angeles soon, and until then, we're finding out more about these brave men and readying ourselves for their homecoming.
Here is the transcript of an e-mail interview with Specialist Moreno.
Q: What is your name, age, rank?
A: My name is Specialist Carlos A. Moreno. I'm 29 years old.
Q: Anything you can tell us about your job/what you're doing over there?
A: I'm a combat engineer in the Army. I work at a gate inspecting vehicles and searching people in Iraq.
Q: Where are you from originally?
A: I'm from the Los Angeles area. I use to live in the Agoura Hills area until I was deployed.
Q: How long have you been in Iraq?
A: We have been in Iraq for about eight months.
Q: What do you miss most about home? Are you married? What family members are waiting for you here?
A: I am a single soldier. I miss my family very much. My mom and her husband along with my three brothers are waiting for me back home.
Q: What has been your most vivid experience while serving?
A: I would say my most vivid experience in Iraq was just seeing how people are actually living here. It's one thing to see things on television, but completely different living in the same area.
Q: What is the first thing you'll do when you get back?
A: The first thing I would like to do is go to a Dodgers game. Aside from my family and friends Dodger stadium is the place I miss the most. I had tickets to go to the opening day game this year but was unable to attend.
I have been serving in the Army for almost eleven years. This was my first time in Iraq. It was an experience that has helped me grow as a person.
I can answer any additional questions you may have. Thank you for your interest in our lives and all the support of people back home.
