Calif. Department of Social Services Response
The following is the California Department of Social Services' response to our investigative report "Criminals Ready To Baby-Sit Your Kids":Ensuring the health and safety of children is the highest priority for the California Department of Social Services. The Trustline Registry only includes people who pass a criminal background check. Because crimes might be committed after a person is on the registry, the Department works with law enforcement agencies so we can take swift action if a registrant engages in criminal activity. The Department of Social Services is engaged with the Dept of Justice in a collaborative effort to improve and streamline how information is shared between the two Departments to expedite review of criminal records so we can jointly provide greater protections for children in daycare.
We investigate all allegations of child care fraud that we learn about. Although KCBS refused to provide the Department with specific information about alleged child welfare fraud, we will continue to work with the Counties, the media and the public to prosecute fraud and to protect children when we are given details about any alleged abuse or fraud. The Department and its county partners are engaged in a statewide effort to reduce Child Care Fraud to ensure children are safe and receiving the quality of care they deserve and that no one is unfairly taking advantage of the system.
