How To Avoid Or React To A Shark Attack

SLIDESHOW: Fatal Shark Attacks In The U.S.

Friday's deadly shark attack off Solana Beach has reminded many Southern Californians to the all too real danger lurking off our coastline. A shark fatally attacked Dr. Dave Martin, 66, just 150 feet from shore. That beach is closed for 72 hours starting on Friday morning. However, most other Southern California beaches are expected to be pack over the weekend due to warm weather.

Here are some shark attack tips:

To avoid at shark attack:

  • Don't go into the ocean if you are bleeding. Sharks can smell blood over a mile away.
  • Stay away from groups of fish, seals, or sea lions. Sharks may be hunting them.
  • Stay away from dead animals in the water.
  • Stay out of the water at dusk, dawn, and night. Certain types of sharks move toward shore to hunt at these times.

If you are attacked:

  • Defend yourself however you can. The eyes and gills are sensitive and are your best target.
  • Try to stop the bleeding and get out of the water as quickly as possible.
