David Ware Crow, 48, of Lakeside was driving with a gunshot wound when he died after crashing into construction equipment on the side of a freeway in Azusa.
Authorities on Thursday identified the 48-year-old man who was driving with a gunshot wound when he crashed into construction equipment on the side of a freeway in Azusa and died at the scene.
He was David Ware Crow of Lakeside, Lt. John Kadas of the coroner's office said.
The crash occurred at 1:04 a.m. Wednesday on the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway at Azusa Avenue, said Deputy Aura Sierra of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.
The driver was headed eastbound on the Foothill Freeway when California Highway Patrol officers noticed the vehicle being driven erratically, Sierra said.
Before officers could conduct a traffic stop, the driver crashed into construction equipment on the side of the road just east of the Azusa Avenue off-ramp, she said.
As officers approached the wreck they saw that the driver was suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso, Sierra said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, she said.
A handgun was found inside the vehicle, she said. It was not immediately clear how or when the man was shot.
Sheriff's detectives were assisting Irwindale police in the investigation, Sierra said.
