A woman was severely burned in a "suspicious" fire at an apartment complex in Pasadena, authorities said Monday.
The 27-year-old woman was hospitalized following the fire, which was reported about 11:15 p.m. Sunday in a third-floor apartment at 53 N. Madison Ave., the Pasadena Fire Department reported.
Arriving firefighters found that a sprinkler system had extinguished the fire, which resulted in about $30,000 in damage, the fire department reported.
The woman suffered first-, second- and third-degree burns to her feet, legs and abdomen, covering about 36 percent of her body, the fire department reported. She also was treated for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters found a pile of clothing smoldering inside the apartment, the fire department reported.
Lisa Derderian of the Pasadena Fire Department said the cause of the fire was "not accidental" and was listed as suspicious. Its cause is still under investigation, she said.
The woman had locked herself in the bedroom "to prevent entry" of firefighters, the fire department reported.
Derderian said that because the building was newer, it had a working sprinkler system that did some water damage, but also prevented injuries and possible deaths.
The alarm system also worked, she said.
Nonetheless, about 150 tenants had to be evacuated, she said.
