Dozens Of Homes Threatened In O.C.

YORBA LINDA, Calif. (AP) ― Orange County fire officials said at least 12 buildings have burned in a wildfire pushed by high winds.

Christy Romero of the Orange County Fire Authority said the blaze began around 9 a.m. near the 91 Freeway in the neighboring Riverside County town of Corona and has grown to as many as 1,000 acres.

The fire jumped the 91 freeway in the afternoon, which resulted in traffic being diverted to the 71 freeway, according to Jerry Twaluczenko of the Corona Police Department. The flames were said to be moving toward the Anaheim Hills, where evacuations were underway.

Fire officials are worked to protect structures Saturday. They urged residents to conserve electricity and water resources.

Televised news reports show at least two homes were scorched in Corona and four were in flames in neighboring Yorba Linda.

Two Corona firefighters were slightly injured when flames engulfed their engine.

Romero said mandatory evacuations are underway. The Anaheim Fire Department advises evacuees to head to: Esperanza High School, 1830 North Kellogg Drive, Anaheim, CA 92807 (located on Kellogg between Imperial and Orangethorpe), Brea Community Center, 695 Madison Avenue Drive, Brea, CA 92821, (corner of Madison and Randolph) or Corona High School, 1150 W. Tenth Street, Corona CA 92882.
