A four-inch valve on the side of a 26-inch water main came loose early Monday, releasing thousand of gallons of water that caused a mudslide on guitarist Eddie Van Halen's property and flooded Coldwater Canyon Avenue in Studio City.
The problem was reported about 1 a.m. at 12754 Mulholland Drive, near Coldwater Canyon Avenue, Department of Water and Power spokesperson Terry Schneider said.
DWP spokeswoman Kim Hughes said the water flow began about 300 feet uphill from the guitarist's home, and a mudslide entered the yard and pool. The home was not damaged, Hughes said.
Water cascaded down Coldwater Canyon Avenue as far as Ventura Boulevard, about a mile away, leaving the street blanketed by mud and debris.
Coldwater Canyon Avenue was closed between Mulholland Drive and Ventura Boulevard while a DWP crew attempted to fix the water main.
Mulholland Drive was also closed -- between Coldwater Canyon Avenue and Benedict Canyon Drive -- but was reopened about 8:45 a.m., Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Cecil Manresa said.
Coldwater Canyon Avenue was partially reopened after daybreak to give residents access to Ventura Boulevard to the north and those headed southbound from Ventura Boulevard to get to the campus of Harvard-Westlake School, Manresa said.
However, Coldwater Canyon Avenue remained closed to through traffic late Monday morning, police said.
The only home directly affected by the break belongs to Van Halen, Manresa said.
Firefighters placed sandbags around the home, preventing any water from entering the living area, but mud and debris filled the pool, he said. Van Halen, who is on tour, was informed of the mishap by telephone.
