Boy, 14, Dies After Van Hits Kids At Bus Stop

SOUTH GATE (CBS) ― A van careened into a bus stop near a middle school in South Gate Monday afternoon, fatally injuring one student and leaving two others hospitalized with critical injuries, authorities said.

The collision occurred at 3:28 p.m. at Otis Street and East Firestone Boulevard, said Inspector Frank Garrido of the county fire department.

A 14-year-old boy died at St. Francis Medical Center, and two other students were hospitalized in critical condition, according to reports from the scene.

Three other youths reportedly escaped with cuts and bruises. All are believed to be students at South Gate Middle School, which is about a block away.

The older-model black van came to rest on a curb near a McDonald's
restaurant at the intersection, and the driver was being questioned, according to a police official.

Investigators were unsure whether speeding or other factors were involved in the crash.
