The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Los Angeles County rose to 7.9 percent in August, up from 7.5 percent in July and above the 5 percent rate in August 2007, state officials reported Friday.
The state's unemployment rate also jumped to 7.7 percent this month from a revised 7.4 percent rate in July, according to the Employment Development Department.
In Orange County, where seasonally adjusted numbers were not available, the jobless rate was 5.8 percent, up slightly from 5.7 percent in July.

A total of 390,000 people were unemployed in August in Los Angeles County, which has a labor force of 4.94 million.
Statewide, more than 1.4 million people were out of work -- up slightly from July.
