Solar-Powered Trash Cans Hit Pasadena Streets

PASADENA (AP) ― There's nothing cheap about the new trash cans on the streets of Pasadena.

The city recently installed the $3,500 bins featuring solar panels on top and a compactor inside. Whenever garbage is tossed in, the compactors automatically crush the material, allowing the so-called "Big Belly" bins to hold up to 200 gallons of waste.

City staff say that will reduce the number of trash pickup trips, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and could cut collection costs by more than 500 percent.
