A motorist was in custody Thursday following a collision in Hollywood that left a taxi driver dead, authorities said.
Avishkar Padhye, 29, was booked on suspicion of manslaughter and was
held on $100,000 bail, Officer April Harding of the Los Angeles Police
Department's Media Relations office said.
The crash occurred about 2:30 a.m., as area bars and nightclubs were
clearing out, LAPD Lt. Jeff Pailet of the Hollywood Station said.
Cab driver Karen Karapetyan, 33, of Garden Grove, was killed, Harding said.
"At least two or three more victims were transported" to hospitals, Pailet said. Their conditions were not immediately known.
According to a preliminary report, a 5-series gray BMW traveling south
on Highland Avenue blew through a red light, striking the blue-and-yellow cab that was headed east on Sunset Boulevard, Officer Sara Faden said.
A Toyota and another BMW then collided with one or both cars, Harding said. The driver of the Toyota was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, she said.
