Stolen Library Computers Recovered
LOS ANGELES
Four computers stolen from the Los Angeles Unified School District were recovered, and an elementary school library aide was arrested in connection with the crime, the school district announced today.
Investigators used tracking software in the computers to locate the stolen merchandise.
"Computers are an important tool to help educate children to become
competitive in the global economy," said LAUSD Chief Operating Officer David Holmquist.
"With the new tracking software, we're confident that (other) stolen district computers will be recovered and returned to the classroom where they
belong and the computer thieves will get to spend some time behind bars,"' Holmquist said.
Tracy Yuba, 40, a library aide at Del Olmo Elementary School, was arrested last week for grand theft, Holmquist said.
Detectives served a search warrant and allegedly found four LAUSD laptop computers in his home.
The Los Angeles School Police Department's Computer Recovery Team was created in 2005 to investigate cases of stolen LAUSD computer hardware and to provide a team of detectives to help recover stolen equipment.
The software used to track the missing computers is part of a package
installed on all computers bought by the LAUSD. Details on the software were not released.
